Detecting and Treating AC Coil Corrosion

This post will discuss methods of detecting and treating leaks due to AC coil corrosion.

Last week, we discussed methods of detecting and removing acid in air conditioner systems. This week’s topic is somewhat related; AC coil corrosion is often a result of exposure to organic or inorganic acids. Some suggest that the uptick in AC coil corrosion that HVAC professionals have seen in recent years is the result of homes with increased insulation. When airflow is reduced due to better construction and insulation practices, compounds like acetic acid, formaldehyde, and acetone remain inside the home for longer. When these compounds come into contact with copper air conditioner coils, it results in formicary corrosion. This post will discuss methods of detecting and treating leaks due to AC coil corrosion.

Detecting AC Coil Corrosion

When air conditioner coils corrode, their surfaces can become pitted. In severe cases, these pits and weak spots form leaks. HVAC technicians can utilize a few different tools to detect leaks in AC/R systems. One of these tools is Best Bubbles Fluo. Created by Cool Air Products, Best Bubbles Fluo is a spray designed to highlight leaks in AC/R systems and fluoresce when exposed to UV light. Simply spray the product near the suspected leak. Best Bubbles Fluo clings to surfaces and forms a thick bubble when exposed to an air conditioning leak. A UV light can be used to make the bubbles easier to spot.

Repairing Pinhole Leaks Due to Formicary Corrosion

There are a few ways that AC/R professionals can patch leaks in AC coils. One method is to use AC Smart Seal External, a leak stop putty, on the outside of the coil. Mix the putty and apply AC Smart Seal External to the outside of the coil at the point of the leak. This is suitable for all leaks up to 5mm, but the seal can also be fortified by using AC Smart Seal. AC Smart Seal is a syringe-applied liquid leak stop for internal use, and it is 100% non-toxic and polymer-free. Both AC Smart Seal External and AC Smart Seal are sold in small, easy-to-carry packages that fit in any toolkit or work truck, giving AC/R technicians the tools to fix any small leak on the spot.
